Abstract

This paper is an attempt to benchmark Technology Management (TM) practices in engineering education against that in industry, and thereby draw conclusions to introduce mechanisms to assure quality of teaching and learning in engineering education to meet the present challenges. Benchmarking is based on five key dimensions of Gregory’s Process Based Model for successful TM. Never before has engineering education been under such an onslaught of pressure from various dimensions. In fact, higher education in general and engineering education in articular has been considered to be one of the biggest industries in this new millennium. The success of quality management in industry has prompted many of us to think “Why not in Education?” Few of us have already begun to answer and today we have enough experience to say that quality management works well in education. With this perspective, the process of benchmarking TM practices in engineering education has been carried out against that in an industry. The research methodology is basically a case study, involving 196 faculty members of engineering institutes and 31 professionals from a leading printing industry. Statistical tools have been used to analyze data and based on the results inferences are drawn and suggestions made accordingly for both the engineering education sector and industry to improve upon the TM dimensions to enhance performance.
