Abstract
Several methods are available for the analysis of stability of embankments constructed o soft clay foundations, such as, the limit equilibrium method (Jewell, 1986;Low 1989), the limit analysis (Yeo and Woodrow, 1992) and the finite element method (Sakai el al., 1990). However, the limit equilibrium method is commonly preferred for its simplicity and reasonable accuracy in determining the factor of safety. The factor of safety depends on the shape of the assumed trial slip surface, the method of stability analysis adopted, the method for minimization and the assumptions made regarding the variation of the undrained shear strength of the foundation soil with dept.
