Abstract

In this paper, a seismic design of semi-gravity geosynthetic reinforced earth wall is presented based on displacement approach. In the semi-gravity reinforced earth wall, part of the earth thrust is mobilized by the reinforcement and the remaining will transfer to the gravity wall. Two part wedge failure mechanism is assumed with reinforced and un-reinforced zones separately. The force transferred to the wall is derived using limit equilibrium approach. For a given allowable permanent displacement, yield acceleration and the weight of the wall are computed using Richards-Elms method. The required thickness of the wall for different values of reinforcement length is presented for a given value of allowable permanent displacement and the angle of shearing resistance.
