Abstract

A simple analytical model is proposed to consider the effect of facing rigidity on the seismic design of a reinforced earth wall. Two-part wedge failure mechanism is assumed which separates the reinforced and un-reinforced zones into two parts. The most critical slip surface is obtained by using Powell's unconstrained minimization technique. The expression for force transferred to the rigid facing is derived using limit equilibrium approach. Pseudo-static approach is used to consider the effect of seismic loading on the design. The thickness of the facing is obtained based on three stability criteria, such as sliding, overturning and eccentricity. All the variables involved in the design are expressed in the non-dimensional form. The effect of reinforcement length on the force transferred to the facing and the thickness of the facing are presented for different values of friction angle and for a given value of coefficient of horizontal acceleration.
