Abstract

In this paper, an analytical model has been developed to simulate the change of phase of the lateral acceleration in the backfill of the retaining structures. The required reinforcement force for equilibrium of failure wedge is derived. The investigation is carried out for both plane failure and bilinear failure surfaces and the results are compared. The results obtained from pseudo-dynamic analysis that considers the change of phase, is compared with pseudo-static analysis. It has been found that the effect of types of failure plane is more significant as compared to the effect of change of phase, on the results. The charts showing the variation of factor of safety with slope angle are presented for coefficient of horizontal acceleration varying from 0.0 to 0.2
