Abstract

This paper introduces genetic algorithms, a relatively new search procedure, for locating the critical slip surface of a soil slope corresponding to minimum factor of safety. The principle of genetic algorithms as a search procedure is briefly explained. The effectiveness of genetic algorithms in locating the critical slip surface of a soil slope is explained with an example problem. The present method uses the Fellienius method of stability analysis which assumes shape of the critical slip surface as circular. The results are compared with other search techniques such as Monte Carlo technique and nonlinear programming techniques. The effect of various GA parameters on the factor of safety of the slope has been investigated.
