Antifungal Activity of taxus Baccata,Pphyllanthus debilis, Plectranthus Amboinicus against Candida species of Clinical Origin

Abstract

Plants with medicinal properties have been applied for a long in the traditional health care, so that sometimes their use takes place concomitantly to the use of industrialized drugs. The present investigation focuses on in- vitro antifungal properties of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of the leaves of Taxus baccata, Phyllanthus debilis and Plectranthus amboinicus. A total of fifteen candida spp which consisted of C.albicans, C.tropicalis, C.parapislosis, C.krusie, C.glabrata three in each were isolated and identified from urine samples were selected for testing. The antifungal activity was assessed by zone of inhibition (disc diffusion method) and the result reveals that the extracts shows significant antifungal activity and Minimum Fungicidal Concentration (MFC) of the extract was done by agar dilution method. The results obtained from the MFC of the ethanol extract of Taxus baccata, Phyllanthus debilis and Plectranthus amboinicus were ranges 150 - >400, 150 - >400, 150- 380μg/ml respectively. Aqueous extract of all three plants have antifungal activity with higher MIC (ranges 260 - >400 μg/ml) values as compared to ethanol extract. Ethanol extract of Plectranthus amboinicus was found to be having higher inhibition with low MIC over the fungal species selected for the study. Further studies are necessary to evaluate the accurate compound responsible for the plants antifungal activity
