Abstract

Objective- The measurements of the foramen magnum (FM) have clinical significance because the vital structures that pass through it may suffer compression such as in cases of FM achondroplasia and FM brain herniation. So, the aim of the present study was to assess the various dimensions of the FM and their relations to sex and age as well as to note variations in its shape.Materials and methods- Cranial computerized tomographic images (CT) of 250 normal subjects between the ages of 18 to 80 years were observed in this study. The sagittal and transverse diameters of the FM were measured with a millimetric sliding caliper. Moreover, the area of the FM and foramina index was also assessed. The statistical analysis for sex and age comparison was done. In addition, the percentages of the variable shape types of the FM were also determined.Results: Our findings showed that the sagittal, transverse diameters and area of the FM were significantly greater in males than in females (P < 0.001). The statistical comparisons of the correlations between all measuring parameters showed significant associations (P < 0.01). The shape of FM was found to be oval in 35.2%; hexagonal in 24.8%; pentagonal in 12.4%; round in 7.6%; trigonal in 1.6%; tetragonal in 6.8%; pentagonal in 12.4%; and irregular in 11.6% of subjects.Conclusion- So, the dimensions of the FM and the variations in its shape done in this study will be helpful for neurosurgeons while doing surgery at the base of skull.
