Background: Xerostomia is a known feature of oral submucous fi brosis (OSMF). In previous studies; patients with the disease have been reported to have xerostomia. To our knowledge there is no data on etiopathogenesis of xerostomia or histopathological changes in major or minor salivary glands in oral submucous fi brosis. Hence a pilot study was conducted to understand the changes in minor salivary glands. Methods: The histopathological changes in minor salivary glands of oral submucous fi brosis patients who reported to have xerostomia were studied in 10 cases retrospectively. The tissue specimens were obtained either from the buccal mucosa or from labial mucosa. Results: All the histopathological specimens/slides were examined showed degenerative changes in acini of the minor salivary glands. Dilated blood vessels and proliferation of the ducts were appreciated along with the infl ammatory cell infi ltrate.
