Abstract

The polymerization of acrylonitrile initiated by the free radical formed in situ from the titanium (III)-acetoxime redox system was studied in aqueous sulfuric acid medium in temperature range of 293-313K. The rate of polymerization (Rp) has been measured for various concentrations of titanium (III), actoxime, sulfuric acid and monomer. Cyclic voltammetric sensing of actoxime under the kinetic conditions demonstrated its reduction behavior. The effects of some water-miscible organic solvents, surfactants and inhibitor on the rate of polymerization were investigated. From the results it was inferred that the polymerization was initiated bu an organic free radical arising from the titanium (III)-acetoxime redox system and termination took place by mutual interaction of the growing free radicals. The temperature dependence of the rate was studied and activation parameters were computed usin Arrhenius and Eyring plots. A mechanism consistent with the experimental results is proposed.
