Abstract

Earthquakes are one of the major destructive forces of nature. To ensure safety and reliability of electric power transmission and distribution system in the event of an earthquake, it essential that each sub component of electric power network is designed to withstand these dynamic forces of earthquakes. An experimental investigation was carried out to evaluate the performance of steel pole during possible earthquake. Seismic tests on the pole were carried out using Tri-axial Shaker table facility at CPRI, Bangalore. The pole was subjected to resonance search and earthquake response tests. The resonance frequencies and mode shapes were also determined by analysis. Analysis of the pole was carried out to evaluate the dynamic characteristics in addition to the seismic analysis using STAAD software. The analytical results, data from exploratory vibration studies are compared with the Shake table experimental values. The earthquake resistance capability of the pole was determined by both analysis and shake table tests. The results of the analysis and conclusions drawn are presented in this paper.
