Failures of structures and other infrastructures are often due to vibration. Evaluation of dynamic characteristics of these will help in assessing their behavior and performance when subjected to vibration in general and earthquakes in particular. The structure should be adequately designed to resist earthquake forces especially in seismic risk zones. Different type dampers are introduced in the basic structure and base isolation techniques are adopted to improve seismic resistance of structure. Shake table tests were carried out at Earthquake Engineering and vibration Research Institute to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of a steel structure with and without damper. In addition, seismic analysis of the steel frame using Software SAP2000 was also carried out. Experimental and analytical results are discussed in this paper.
