Abstract

Thedynamic response of a multi-storey plane frame structure having three degrees of freedom (two translations along x, y -axes and one rotation about z-axis) at each node, with multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMD) on its top subjected to harmonic ground motion is studied. MTMD with uniformly distributed frequencies are considered for this purpose. The effect of damping ratio of the dampers on the effectiveness of the MTMD is also studied. A four storey plane frame structure is considered to study the above effect. The response of structure with MTMD is found to be less in comparison to the corresponding response without MTMD, implying that the MTMD are effective in reducing forces and displacement in the structure. It is also found that there exists an optimum value of TMD damping for which effectiveness of MTMD is maximum.
