Abstract

In this paper, the effects and the optimization of machining parameters on surface roughness and specific cutting energy during surface grinding of 6061Al-SiC35P composites under different process parameters such as Vol% of SiC, feed and depth of cut were investigated using response surface methodology (RSM). The specific cutting energy and surface roughness are considered as performance characteristics. Experiments are conducted using standard RSM design called Central composite design (CCD). A second order response model was developed for specific cutting energy and surface roughness. The results identify the significant influence factors to minimise the specific cutting energy and surface roughness. Derringer’s desirability function was then used for simultaneous optimization of specific cutting energy and surface roughness. The confirmation results demonstrate the practicability and effectiveness of the proposed approach.
