Abstract

This course is designed in the light of expanding knowledge in the specialized subject of cluster chemistry and to help develop the skills and knowledge of students in modern educational institutions of science and technology. The outline in this paper is planned for use as a special topics course for graduate-level classes. This course outline highlights the essential principles and important concepts of cluster chemistry and gives practical applications of clusters in catalysis, organic chemistry, and materials science. It begins with chemical background and cluster classification, proceeds to synthetic strategies and methods of characterization, then to structures and bonding and chemical properties, and finally concludes with a study of industrial aspects and other applications. This makes the topic coverage cohesive. Each section is divided into several subsections that explain the subject to help the reader try the concepts presented. In addition to the presentation of important information in the area, active involvement of student learning is incorporated through seminars that help to keep them well versed with recent developments in the field and develops their ability to speak before an audience. Apart from the books mentioned in the outline, the course also incorporates various review articles, monographs, papers, and comments that have appeared in regular international journals.
