Abstract

Anxiety in the medical setting is somewhat expected but can become a clinical issue that can result in significant lifestyle impairment if left untreated. The study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of foot and hand massage on the anxiety in post operative open heart surgery patients. The study design was a randomized control trial and was performed in the Cardio-thoracic unit, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. 30 patients were selected based on sampling criteria and were randomly allocated to the experimental (n=15) and control group (n=15). Preoperative anxiety was measured for both the groups. In the post operative period, the experimental group received 20 minutes foot and hand massage along with the routine care and the control group received only the routine care. Anxiety was measured by State Anxiety Inventory. The results were that in the preoperative period, only 36.7% patients had anxiety and in the post operative period, all the patients (100%) had anxiety on post operative day 1. After administering the foot and hand massage, there was not a significant difference in the anxiety (p=0.0057) between the experimental and control group of post operative open heart surgery patients. Hence, it was concluded that foot and hand massage was not effective in the reduction of level of pain in post operative open heart surgery patients.
