Abstract

Summary:Patients with haemophilia are evaluated on a regular basis at their haemophilia centres. The information on knowledge on self-care, physical health, social support and self-esteem is minimal among patient and/or parent/ caregiver about haemophilia. Aim:To assess the knowledge of disease and its management, physical health, social support and self-esteem, among person with Haemophilia. Methodology:Descriptive survey design was used, the data collected from 49 patients who were attended the hemophilia summer camp organized by Manipal Haemophilia Society, Kasturba Hospital Manipal. The data collection tools were demographic proforma, knowledge on self-care, physical health, social support and self-esteem scale. Interview technique was used to collect the data from patients and caregivers (parents, siblings). If the patient is below 8 years the data were collected from the parents or the caregivers. Result:A total of 49 patients and caregivers (parents, siblings, guardians) had been interviewed. 57% of respondents had adequate knowledge about self-care. About 75% of the respondent had moderate risk in the area of physical health, regard to social support majority 100% had moderate social support and 96% had moderate self-esteem. Conclusion:persons with haemophilia experience physical health problems which inturn affects their day to day activities. It is evident that 75% of persons had moderate had social support and it is important to enhance the social support to help them to adapt to the health situations well as improving the self-esteem.
