The rationale for surface treatment (coating) of dental implants is to produce a bioactive surface which promotes bone growth (osseointegration) and induces a direct bond between the implant and hard tissues and produce roughened surface for bone ingrowth to ensure anchorage in the jaw. The aim of this review is to provide an insight and enrich our knowledge on various surface treatment (coating) materials and methods adopted on dental implants promoting osseointegration, a prerequisite for clinical success of dental implants. The review clearly explains the merit and demerits of different materials used and different methods employed. It provides an updated knowledge to the dentists who are involved in dental implants, to select and use the best biomaterial. This would help in clinical success of dental implants.
