Abstract
The search for a universal ideal arch form has been one of the most persistent but elusive tasks that orthodontic researchers have pursued. This article illustrates the evolution of arch forms from its most ancient times. Arch form is the unique expression of individual development and probably no universal design will ever be able to account for the many small, but significant, variations in the arch shape of individuals. The common consensus, therefore, seems to be that individualization and coordination of arch forms for each patient is a must to obtain optimum long term stability.
