Abstract

Objective: Our study aimed to evaluate Oral Health Related Quality of Life as predictor for having dental caries experience and SiC index (Significant Caries Index) in children of Udupi district. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was done among navy cadets to evaluate Oral Impacts on Daily Performances, dental caries and SiC index using Plain mouth mirrors and CPI probes under natural lighting conditions. Results: All the items in the OIDP questionnaire and total OIDP score was significantly higher among caries experienced cadets than caries free cadets as assessed with DMFT. Similarly finding was seen with individuals within SiC index when compared with individuals outside the SiC index. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves were plotted. The area under the curve (AUC) for SiC index was 0.619 and for Caries experience was 0.691(p<0.001 and <0.001 respectively). Both the curves were above the reference line which was suggestive that both curves predicted individuals with disease. Optimal cut-off point for SiC index curve was considered as 10.5 OIDP score with sensitivity of 57.5% and specificity of 64% with a positive likelihood ratio of 1.6. Optimal cut-off point for caries experience curve was considered as 10.5 OIDP score with sensitivity of 57% and specificity of 79.4% with a positive likelihood ratio of 2.77. Conclusion: Child-OIDP can be a predictor for having dental caries experience and SiC index in children of Udupi district.
