Discrimination against women & girls is widespread in India and manifests itself in many ways. It has been reported that, the moral guilt attached to elimination of the girl child, after she is born, is not felt equally, if the child is eliminated while still in the womb, i.e, the foeticide. This cause decline in the no. of girls in the population which is a matter of great concern. One of the main reasons for this is, advances in medical technologies such as aminocentesis, ultrasound etc that have the potential to detect the gender of the fetus in prenatal period or even fix the gender of the child at the preconception stage. Actually these developments are intended to help the doctors in diagnosis of congenital diseases and sex linked disorders. Unfortunately these tests & procedures were used to determine the gender of the foetus & ends up in the murder of the innocent unborn child within the mother’s. The Supreme Court, taking a serious view on this discriminatory practice and directed to implement an Act. This Act is known as Pre conception and Pre Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994.
