Abstract

Information literacy aims to achieve the larger goal of educating the student community to identify information need, access the needed information, evaluate and organize it for the application. The task of training the user for the ‘need’ is one of the prerogatives and compulsion in all the fields of higher education. The library and information science field takes the pride of shouldering the responsibility of training and re-training the users by adopting innovative practices. The aim of this paper is to highlight the information literacy programs, which is considered as a ‘best practice’ at the KMC Health Sciences Library, Manipal University, Manipal. The information literacy sessions conducted in KMC Health Sciences library aimed to sensitize the library users about the features of different e-resources subscribed by the library. Total of 774 users attended in the 12 information literacy sessions conducted by the Health Sciences Library in the year 2013. Different training methods were adopted by the training specialist/manager of each database/e-resources portal during the information literacy sessions. The results indicated that users benefited by the expertise gained from the sessions for maximal resource utilizations with minimal expenditure of time. The outcome measures indicated that a well designed information literacy program benefited the faculty, researchers and students of the KMC Health Sciences library in addition to providing visibility for the library services and activities.
