Chitosan is an excellent biodegradable, nontoxic and biocompatible polymer that is extensively used as a drug delivery system. It has remarkable properties that have paved the way for the introduction of chitosan in biomedical and pharmaceutical fields. However due to its poor solubility in water or in organic solvents, it has limited applications. The efforts to overcome the limitations of chitosan resulted in derivatives which are more effective than chitosan in various drug delivery systems. New properties are imparted to the chitosan by the chemical modification of the chain, generally by grafting of functional groups without modification of the initial skeleton in order to conserve the original properties. Chemical modifications of chitosan yielded various types of chitosan derivatives that are used to enhance the efficiency of drug delivery by various routes. The present review aims to provide an overview of chitosan derivatives and their usefulness in drug delivery.
