Abstract

Web is characterized by a collection of huge heterogeneous data with various data sources. This necessitates an integrating approach for the information retrieval of such diverse data over the Web. XML has become a standard for data representation and exchange over the Web. Therefore the problem of information retrieval over the Web can be condensed to the problem of information retrieval of XML data sources. Some literatures corroborate the classical information retrieval strategies customized to the XML information retrieval. There are some evidences of novel XML information retrieval strategies better performing in the constrained environments. Though great deal of thought has been given to provide rapid and intelligent retrieval systems with the advent of computers, the problem of effective retrieval remains largely unsolved. This survey culminated from such efforts intends to explore possible avenues for research in the domain of XML information retrieval over the Web.
