Abstract

As some constraints make the availability and use of river sand less attractive, a substitute product for concrete industry needs to be found. This paper presents the feasibility of the usage of marine sand from Malpe beach, along west coast of Karnataka, as partial substitute for natural sand in concrete. Tests were conducted on cubes and beams of M40 concrete made of marine sand and the results were compared with the 100 percent natural sand concrete. On fresh concrete the tests related to workability measures and strength were carried out. Durability tests on concrete like resistance to sea water,and capillary action were carried out. It is found that the compressive, flexural strength and Durability Studies of concrete made of 30% marine sand as partial substitute are more or less equal to the conventional concrete.
