Next-generation Mobile network (NGBN) service is a novel concept commonly used by network designers to depict their vision of future telecommunications networks. The Second-Generation Network (2G), which is already out of vogue in most advanced countries, is still being deployed in third world countries. The Third- Generation (3G) Network was expected to solve all the problems encountered in the previous generations, but the persistent demand for higher rates and the non compatibility of the 3G standards has shifted the enthusiasm to beyond 3G (B3G) or Fourth-Generation (4G). This paper re-examines the various generations of network standards with the intention to focus the mind set of the telecom planers and designers and also raise their research consciousness.
