Abstract

Introduction: There is a debate that therapeutic benefits of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin were partly due to their antioxidant properties. We wanted to evaluate the biochemical changes in experimental animals by treating them with aspirin and inducing inflammation. Materials and methods: Institutional Animal Ethics Committee gave the permission to carry out this study. Healthy albino wistar rats (150-200 gm) of either sex, 12 weeks old, bred locally in the animal house of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal housed under controlled conditions were used for the study. The rats were starved overnight. Control group rats received 2 ml of 2% gum acacia orally.Test group received aspirin 400 mg/kg orally. Thirty minutes later rats were challenged by a subcutaneous injection of 0.05ml of 1% carrageenin into the plantar aspect of the hind paw of the rats in both control and test group. Plasma protein thiols, ceruloplasmin and lipid hydroperoxide were measured in each group at zero hours and after 24 hours of induced inflammation and results were compared. Results and conclusion: We observed a significant increase in levels of protein thiols after 24 hours as compared to zero hour value in controls but in aspirin treated group there was a significant decrease in the respective values (p< 0.001). Ceruloplasmin showed an increase after 24 hours as compared to zero hour in each group. 24 hour value of lipid hydroperoxide increased in control but showed a decrease in aspirin treated group suggesting its possible antioxidant effect.
