Abstract

Clitoria ternatea (L) commonly known as aparajita is used for the treatment of liver disorders by the tribal people of Tamil Nadu. In the present study successive extracts of C. ternatea were evaluated for their total phenolic and flavonoid content. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by using different antioxidant models and hepatoprotective activity was evaluated on rat liver damage induced by paracetamol. The acetone and methanol extract showed better free radical scavenging activity. The extracts also showed significant hepatoprotection as evident by the prevention in the elevation of serum marker enzymes and biliru bin levels after paracetamol assault. The plant extracts also showed good amount of phenolic and flavonoids in them. The present study thus validates its traditional claim for its hepatoprotective activity.
