Abstract

Introduction:Every year students from different parts of India and abroad join the medical sciences course offered by Manipal University. A majority of these students leave their protected family atmosphere to enter into a new environment. Hence, they need lot of guidance and psychological support to sail through all the difficulties. So, faculty are appointed as teacher guardian for students. To do good mentoring faculty must be aware of the role and responsibilities of a mentor understand the needs of the students. Unfortunately no prior information or training is given to faculty regarding their role as mentors. Objective: To assess the students feedback towards the attributes of current student mentoring program. Based on the feedback, suitably modify this program and develop a training program for faculty to improve their mentoring skills. Materials and methods : A questionnaire was constructed, validated by subject experts, foundation for advancement of international medical education and research (FAIMER) listserv feedback and piloting questionnaire to small number of participants. After obtaining institutional ethics committee clearance, questionnaire was administered to 214 students who consented to participate. Results and conclusion: Questionnaires were analyzed using spss software. Chi-square test was used for test – re test .Students felt non availability, busy class schedule, approachability were the major obstacles when interacting with their mentor. More than 60% agreed that specific training/guideline are required for mentors to do proper mentoring. Students suggested that there should be frequent and regular meetings with students and mentors. Also, their mentors should be from subjects other than current teaching subjects: were the suggestions for improvement.
