Tongue coating is one of the major reasons for oral malodour. The dorsum of the tongue is a large surface for oral accumulati on of microorganisms and debris which leads to putrefaction and release of volatile gases that causes malodour. Oral malodour level s in 52 subjects were assessed by gas chromatography and accordingly divided into two groups: an odour group and a no/low odour group. Tongue coati ngs were sampled and organisms were categorized. These results suggest that an increase in the number of H2S-producing bacteria in the tongue biofilm is responsible for oral malodour.
