Abstract

Hepatotoxicity is an important adverse effect of antitubercular drugs isoniazid, rifampin and pyarzinamide. The leaves of plectranthus amboinicus have shown protective effect against carbon tetrachloride and paracetamol induced hepatotoxicity in rats. The present study was aimed at evaluating the hepatoprotective activity of ethanolic extreact of leaves of plectranthus amboinicus against antitubercular drug induced hepatotxicity in rats. Five groups of wister rats with six animals in each group, were used in the study . The two control groups received gum acacia and combination of rifampin, pyrazinamide and isoniazed respectively . the two test groups were treated with antitubercular drugs followed by 600 and 900mg/kg orally of ethanolic extract of plectranthus amboinicus respectively. The fifth group (standard hepatrprotective) received antitubercular drugs followed by silymariin 50mg/kg orally.Serum alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and hepatic tissue antioxidant levels were estimated to asses hepatic damage .Results were analysed by one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's test. The ethoanolic extract of plectranthus amboinicus significantly (p<0.05) prevented antitubercular drugs induced changes in the serum hepatic enzymes and hepatic tissue antioxidant levels. The ethanolic extract of leaves of plectranthus amboinicus had a protective against antitubercular drugs induced hepatotoxicity in rats.
