Abstract

Phytochemicals are natural occurring substances with biological potential in medicinal plants and plant-derived food. Phenolic compounds particularly flavonoids have reported with different biological activities. The present investigation evaluvates the antioxidant activity of petroleum ether and methanol extracts of the plants Aerva lanata and shoot of Boerhivia diffusa procured from the Western Ghats of Karnataka. The study included the screening of the plant extracts for their in vivo antioxidant potential in experimental rats. Intrinsic antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase, catalase and peroxidise in the liver were targeted during the study. The extracts and the compounds obtained from the petroleum ether extract have shown promising antioxidant activity. The pronounced activity observed could be attributed to the presence of pharmacologically active secondary metabolites sush as flavonoids and saponins. Petroleum ether and Methanol extract of B. diffusa and A. lanata possesses antioxidant activity and supports the traditional use of the plant in treatment of liver disorders.
