Chalcones are 1, 3-diaryl-2 propene- 1-ones belonging to favonoid family. They are naturally occurring substances, are found in a number of plants and are synthetically prepared(1). Generally, chalcones are synthesised by condensation of simple or aromatic aldehydes and ketones by base catalysed or acid catalysed followed by dehydration to yield chalcones. They consists of open chain flavonoids in which the two aromatic rings are joined bya three carbon α,β-unsaturated carbonyl system. By the presence of reactive α, β unsaturated keto function in chalcone is seen to be responsible for their antimicrobial activity (2).
