Public Transit Systems are one of the social facilities which are provided with the aim of improving social welfare and they also serve as the primary means of transportation across major metropolitan cities and towns. However providing equitable and efficient public transport for the ever increasing demand with the limited resource available is always a challenge to the service providers and the concerned government. Thus there is an urgent need to evaluate public transit systems present in the existing locations and identify opportunities and deficiencies in the same so that the existing services can be improved by introducing more services on the routes which are over-crowded during peak hours and thus improving the level of service. The paper presents evaluation study carried on the bus transit system in Udupi City discussing its importance and the performance of the service as of today based on commuter perception. It also aims to identify opportunities and deficiencies and suggest measures for improving the same.
