Abstract
Masonry infills are normally considered as non-structural elements and theirstiffness contributions are generally ignored in practice, but these infills behave as a constituent part of the structural system and tend to interact with it thus enhancing thestiffness and strength of the structural system when subjected to seismic forces. Manyurban multi-storey structures have a traditional practice of having open ground storey forparking oreception lobbies, which leads to reduced stiffness in that storey compared tothe rest. In the present study an attempt has been made to compare the seismicperformance of both infilled and bare Reinforced Concrete (RC) frames. For this purpose,2D RC frames with different structuralconfiguration (viz. Number of storeys, number ofbays and location of infill) are considered andtheir seismic performance is assessed withthe help of pushover curves. ETABS, a finite element software is used to carry outpushover analysis. Base shear carried, roof displacement undergone, number of hingesformed are the parameters used to assess the seismic performanceof soft storey RCframes. It is inferred that the structures with infill possess greater stiffness when compared to bare frame.
