Abstract
Managing the modern libraries & information centers pre requisites the implementation of library automation. Library Management Systems (LMS) mainly include the automation of various library housekeeping operations. The necessity of collection, processing, storing and timely retrieval of vast amount of literature/information for use by its users initiated the process of library automation. Over the past few years library automation systems are becoming integral part of any libraries. In India the use of open source software & commercial software for automation of many University libraries has taken pace through the efforts of INFLIBNET, UGC INFONET, and DELNET. The paper presents basics of library automation process explaining selection of software, its implementation in planned manner and its use with various modules. It also discusses the scenario of library automation in University libraries of Karnataka. The findings and conclusions would be useful for the librarians of academic libraries for automation purpose.
