Abstract

An indirect forced convection solar drier with conical concentrator has been developed and tested for drying potato under the meteorological conditions of Karnataka, India. The system consists of a concentrating type solar air heater with heat storage unit, a drying chamber, and a fan. Drying experiments have been performed at an air flow rate of 0.05 m3/s. Drying of potato in a forced convection solar drier improves the drying rate by 27% as compared to open sun drying and reduces the moisture content from around 70% to the final moisture content of 21.7% in 6 hours. Average drier efficiency was estimated to be 33.2%. The specific moisture extraction rate was estimated to be 1.91 gm/min.
