Abstract

The Indian System of Medicine is centuries old. Ayurveda forms the backbone of Indian System of Medicine. Yoga, which is a practice helps to purify mind and body. Yoga was profoundly a part of living among ancient Indians. Later other systems of medicine such as Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy were integrated into overall healthcare of Indian population, before allopathy (modern medicine) became the preferred choice of treatment in modern day lives. A brief background about history of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy systems (referred collectively as Traditional Medicine or Complementary and Alternative Medicine - CAM) along with market size and current trends for CAM products, challenges associated with use of CAM and a brief profile about Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India is discussed.
