Abstract

Objectives: to assess the cardiac invalidism in MI patients both at discharge and during first review and to compare the cardiac invalidism at discharge and during first review in MI patients. Methods: Descriptive survey design with purposive sampling technique was used to collect data from 78 patients with first attack of MI admitted to Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. Results: None of the participants had severe cardiac invalidism, 9 (11.5%) had moderate cardiac invalidism at discharge. Only 2 (2.8%) had moderate cardiac invalidism during first review. About 54 (69.2%) had mild cardiac invalidism at discharge and 46 (64.8%) had mild cardiac invalidism during first review. About 15 (19.2%) were free of cardiac invalidism at discharge and increased to 23 (32.4%) during first review. Out of 9 (11.5%) sample who had moderate cardiac invalidism at discharge, 2 (28.6%) had mild cardiac invalidism, 3 (42.8%) became free of invalidism during first review,2 (28.6%) remained in moderate category and two dropped out during 1st review. Out of 54 (69.2%) sample who had mild cardiac invalidism at discharge 16 (31.4%) moved to free category,35 (68.6%) remained in mild category and three dropped out during 1st review. Out of 15 (19.2%) samples who were free of invalidism at discharge, 9 (60%) developed mild invalidism during first review and 4 (26.7%) remained in the free category and two dropouts during first review. Conclusion: Cardiac invalidism experienced during the first review was less when compared to the discharge time (t value= 2.220, p=0.030).
