Abstract
The International Lobour Organization has estimated that, 24,000 fatalities and 24million nonfatal injuries occur worldwide each year among fishermen. Objective: To assess the knowledge and practice on safety measures among fishermen. Materials and Methods : Descriptive survey design was used. A non- probability convenient sampling technique was used to select 80 samples and data collected from them by using structured knowledge questionnaire and practice scale on safety measures related to fishing. The adults were between the age group of 20-50 years, available in fishing harbour of Malpe. Data was collected from fishermen, available in Malpe harbor through interview technique. Data wasanalyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: Majority of fishermen had average knowledge (78.8%), and only 10% of subjects had poor knowledge on safety measures.48.8% fishermen had favourable safety practice. There was a positive relationship between knowledge and practice on safety measures (r=0.2, p<0.04). It is inferred that as the knowledge increases practice on safety measures also increases. 39% fishermen reported that, wearing suitable personal protective devices before going to the sea and 12 % are told not going for fishing when it is prohibited by district administration. Conclusion: Study concluded that, safety measures need to be encouraged to practice and awareness programmes to be conducted.
