Abstract

The quality of the components produced during face milling of Hot work Chromium Steel (AISI H11) is important as it influences the performance of the finished part to great extent. Hence, understanding surface roughness is one of the most important requirements in machining of Hot work Chromium Steel. In this paper, a statistical model was developed to predict the surface roughness with the help of the commercial software package MINITAB15. The experiments have been conducted using Taguchi‟s experimental design technique. The matrix of test conditions included longitudinal feed of 35, 175 and 315 mm/min, cutting speed of 450, 675 and 900 rev/min and depth of cut 0.25, 0.5, 0.75mm.The effect of cutting parameters on surface roughness is evaluated and the optimum cutting condition for minimizing the surface roughness is determined. A second-order model has been established between the cutting parameters and surface roughness using response surface methodology.
