Abstract

The traditional method of Overall Elasto-Hydrodynamic Lubrication analysis of a journal bearing usually involves the development of complicated numerical calculation programs based on the simplification of actual physical model. In several research papers the application of general CFD codes makes this analysis effective where complex flow geometries are involved or when more detailed solutions are needed. This paper deals with the overall Elasto Hydrodynamic analysis of a journal bearing using the sequential application of CFD and CSD. Here the coupled field analysis uses the capabilities of commercially available Finite Element Software ANSYS/FLOTRAN and the technique of fluid structure interaction (FSI). ANSYS/FLOTRAN is applied to simulate the pressure field and calculate the static characteristics of hydrodynamic journal bearing for various eccentricity ratios and length to diameter ratios. The results show reasonable agreement in general.
