Abstract

Aluminium is ranked after iron and steel in the metal market. The demand of aluminium grows rapidly because it has unique combination of properties, which make it as one of the most versatile engineering and construction materials. Aluminium 6061 alloy has been selected by many designers and engineers for different kind of applications. Further, its strength is improved by cold working, grain size refining, precipitation hardening and dispersion hardening. In the present study, experiments are conducted to investigate the effects of age hardening parameters like, Solutionizing Time, Aging Temperature and Ageing Time on hardness of 6061 Aluminium alloy using Design of Experiments. A linier regression model is used to predict the response. From the results it can be seen that, the ageing temperature and aging time have a significant effect on the response whereas, solutionizing time does not have a significant effect. For a specific set of parameters the hardness is improved from 50 to 74 BHN, resulted in an increase in hardness by about 50%.
