Abstract

Diabetic retinopathy is a medical condition associated with diabetic patients where in the retinal cells undergo progressive damage resulting in blindness. The various signs of diabetic retinopathy include formation of microaneurysms, hemorrhages, cotton wool spots and hard exudates. Hard exudates are lipoprotein precipitates which gets leaked from retinal blood vessels and deposited in the outer layers of retina. These exudates can lead to poor vision or blindness which necessitates the need of earlier detection to reduce the severity of the disease. The paper aims to discuss and analyze the various techniques employed for the detection of hard exudates. This paper also throws a limelight on some of the segmentation techniques which helps to determine the severity of the disease.
