The search for the hexatic phases such as smectic-F andG in N-(p-n-alkoxybenzylidene)- p-n-alkyl anilines, n0.m s series has revealed that a number of higher homologues of this series exhibit a direct isotropic liquid to hexatic smectic-F and G phases in addition to the lone compound hither to known in n0.m series viz., 100.14. The compounds of the 120.m series (with rn = 12, 14 and 16), 110.12 and n0.14 series (with n = 10 to 16) exhibit a direct smectic-F, while the compound 180.14 exhibits a direct smectic-G transition from isotropic liquid
