Vertical axis wind turbine have potential advantages for domestic application, as they can be effective for urban areas where wind is intermittent, omni-directional, unsteady and turbulent. This paper highlights the progress made in the aerodynamic development of the Helical, Straight and Curved blade of Darrieus rotor vertical axis wind turbine(VAWT). The numerical simulation employs a multiple stream tube concept. The standard blade element theory is applied in each of the stream tube to calculate the induced velocity which is then used to find out the force acting on the rotor blade element. A numerical simulation which can predict the rotor performance with reasonable accuracy was modelled. This model can be used to study the effect of rotor geometrical variation, such as solidity ratio, blade chord length, height to diameter ratio. Numerical method highlights the geometrical point of view, design parameters and constraints. Unsteady flow pattern around all types darreius type VAWT is numerically investigated in two dimensional and three dimensional using Computational fluid dynamics(CFD).
