Abstract

To determine the adiponectin levels in diabetic subjects without any pre-existing micro or macrovascular complications. This was a cross sectional study comprised 205 healthy individuals and 229 diabetic subjects without any pre-existing micro or macrovascular complications. The mean values of adiponectin of diabetic group were significantly lower when compared to non-diabetic individuals. (p=0.0021). Again in diabetic males the adiponectin level was lower than non-diabetic males. Normal females showed low adiponectin levels when compared to normal males, whereas diabetic females demonstrated higher adiponectin values than diabetic males. The adiponectin, in normal subjects showed a negative significant correlation (p= - 0.302) when compared with BMI. Significant correlation existed between adiponectin and HbA1c (p= -0.366) in diabetics and this was absent in normal subjects. This study demonstrated low adiponectin levels in diabetic persons without any complications and is a independent predictor of future development of risk associated with diabetes.
