Abstract

Management of Diabetes includes regular monitoring and maintenance of blood glucose which is achieved by analyzing blood glucose levels and glycated haemoglobin that needs venipuncture which causes discomfort to the patients. To make monitoring of glycemic status more acceptable to the patients, a non-invasive and painless procedure is very desirable. The aim of this study was to measure plasma fasting glucose, MDA, total protein thiols and compares their respective levels in saliva. Blood glucose levels were estimated in Cobas 6000 autoanalyser. MDA were assessed by thiobarbituric acid as a substrate and Total protein thiols were estimated by Ellmann's method. The results indicate a strong and significant association of fasting plasma glucose with fasting salivary glucose, plasma MDA with salivary MDA,Plasma. Total thiols with salivary total thiols and fasting plasma glucose with salivary MDA and Salivary total protein thiols which indicates that saliva could be established as a non invasive tool for screening and monitoring the prognosis of Diabetes mellitus.
