Abstract
Quaternary ammonium surfactants (QAS) have got wide industrial applications in textiles, cosmetics, antimicrobial paints and emulsions etc. QAS with long alkyl chains are best known for their antimicrobial properties. In the present research paper, QAS molecules have been synthesized from maleic anhydride (MA), fatty alcohols, epichlorohydrin and trimethyl amine. The synthetic route is novel and yields were above 90%. The molecules were confirmed spectroscopically by FTIR and 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR. Recombinant E.coli cultures were prepared using pET22b vector. The antimicrobial studies were carried out by standard growth curves of the bacteria. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) was used to study the extent of viable cell damage. The degradation studies of the QAS molecules were carried out using FTIR.
