Chlorhexidine is a well known chemical plaque control agent. Besides this its beneficial effect on the gingival health and reducing the Streptococcus and Lactobacillus counts has been substantiated in various studies. Triphala, is a classically ayurvedic compound in the traditional medicinal system of India. A study was conducted on 1501 school children divided into three groups (1- Triphala Mouthwash; 11- Chlorhexidine mouthwash, 111- control) to determine the effect of mouthwashes on the plaque, gingival status and microbiologic counts over a period of 9 months. Both the experimental groups (group I and II) showed a similar trend in reducing the plaque formation and gingivitis. Similar antibacterial effect was also found in these groups and it was observed that the antibacterial effect was more pronounced on the Lactobacillus counts as compared to Streptococcus mutans counts.
